As Springs comes to a close, we have experienced a surprising early dry spell in the Indianapolis area, with May rain totals well below the monthly average. This is a great time to be thinking about installing a rain barrel at home or at your business to capture water from your roof when the rain finally comes!

Our annual average of around 41” of rain can yield up to 20 gallons annually per square foot of rooftop –
that’s a lot of water that can be used to water the landscape, conserve water and energy, and
save money on your water bill. Use the City’s stormwater page to learn more about the amount of
rooftop space you have and calculate potential yields accordingly and review information about rain
barrels in the Green Supplemental Document on the same page:

We also have information about rain barrels, including local sources, on our website:

Recently our own John Hazlett was interviewed by the Indianapolis Star for an article on the benefits of rain barrels.  You can read that article HERE.
